Family Service

Child care for employees and students

At Kiel University, we do our best to make our families feel welcome and at home. There are a number of child care facilities for students and staff on and near campus. We want to help you to pursue your studies or your career successfully, knowing your children are well looked after. If you need personal advice please contact us!

Allocation of child care places

Places are usually available at the beginning of the school year, in August or September. We allocate these places in December of the previous year, so you should have applied for these places latest in November. Single vacancies occur throughout the year when children leave, e.g. due to a move.

If there are vacant places we select children from the waiting list following certain criterias such as single parents, parents still within their scientific qualification, need for integration, siblings already in Kiel University kindergarten, group structure, family moving to Kiel... However it is not important at what time you got on the waiting list.

We will inform you directly whether your child has got a place and in which facility. Then you have the opportunity to visit the facility and to decide (within a certain period) if you wish to accept the place for your child.

Please note: You must be a resident of Kiel to be eligible for Kiel University child care places. Residents of towns surrounding Kiel have to apply for child care places in their town of resident.

Daycare hours and fees

All child care places at Kiel University (daycare, nursery and kindergarten places) are full time places for eight hours per day.
Some facilities offer early or late child care times; the actual number of hours of daily care varies depending on the facility.

The fee for a child care place is laid down in Kiel City's Statute of Fees. It is

  • 320 Euro per month for a full time crib place (age under three years)
  • 248 Euro per month for a Kindergarten place (age three years and up).

Depending on your financial circumstances you may be eligible for a reduction of this fee. Siblings also pay a reduced fee.

There is an additional lunch money fee of 40 Euro per month (cannot be reduced).

Childcare during short visits of Kiel University (weeks to months)

If your stay at Kiel University is only for a shorter period of time, it is very hard to impossible to find childcare for your child. Most cribs and Kindergartens won´t take children just for a few weeks or months. You will likely have to organize your childcare privately. There is sometimes a possibility via "Tagespflege". The information center for child care places of Kiel City can give you  more information

If we can´t provide a child care place

If your child is one year old, it has a legal right for a daycare place. If we do not have any vacant places, it is best to contact the information center for child care places of the city of Kiel. The information center will help you to find a place. Here you can find more information
