Child care system in Kiel

Depending on where you live and the age of your child, you might find some challenges to find a suitable child care place in Kiel. The University and the student union provide child care places close to campus, but usually there is a waiting list for the places. Therefore it is necessary to refer to waiting lists of other facilities as well. The best chance to get a place is after the summer school holidays, where there are the most vacancies. These vacant places are usually allocated in December, half a year previous, so it is best to get on the different waiting lists not later than November each year. During the year vacancies occur irregularly and it is more difficult to find a place.

If your duration of stay is only a few months, it is likely, that there won´t be any possibility for childcare at all. Please consider this while planning your stay.

You have to be a citizen of Kiel to get a daycare place in Kiel (except private daycare places). If you live in surrounding towns, the town of residence has to provide daycare for your child.

Frequently used terms

At "Tagespflege" there are a maximum of 5 children under the age of 3 that a "Tagesmutter" or "Tagesvater" (childminder) takes care of. The "Tagespflege" is smaller and more familiar than a crib.
